Redington Waders Review

Criteria for Selecting Waders

Redington waders are one of the many high quality fly fishing products offered by this Pacific Northwest company. Whether fishing for trout, bass or any freshwater game fish, waders enable anglers to catch more fish and get close to nature.  Redington waders come in a variety of styles, sizes and prices to meet the needs of all flyfishing enthusiasts. There are also many other brands of waders on the market so how do you decide what is right for you?  When selecting waders and any accessories, the key considerations are price, the fishing conditions that you will most likely be facing and the time you actually spend fishing.

Waders Made of Different Material are Best Suited For Different Fishing Conditions

Most modern waders are made out of rubber, nylon, a synthetic material called Neoprene or what are known as “breathable” materials such as Gore-Tex.

Nylon and their predecessor rubber waders are the least expensive of the wader materials but also the least comfortable and conveninent to use. These  waders often come with a hard boot built into the unit. This saves money since you don't need to buy separate wading boots but also reduces flexbility.  Rubber waders are loose fitting and heavy and nylon waders while lighter and are subject to tears particularly if you are fishing in rough terrain. Neither of these waders are "breathable" and are generally the choice of novice or infrequent fisherman or those whose primary focus is price.

Consider Air and Water Temperature

Nylon and rubber waders offer some protection from low temperatures but Neoprene waders provide much more insulation.  When considering temperature, understand both the air and water temperature you will be fishing in.  Bodies of water fed by snow melt mountain streams can remain frigid regardelss of the air temperature. So if you are going to be fishing primarily in cold weather conditions such as Alaska, Canada or during the winter months, waders constructed of Neoprene can be a good choice.  Neoprene is a synthetic rubber that is waterproof and remains flexible over a wide temperature range. In addition to waders, it is used in a variety of insulating aquatic applications such as diving equipment and wetsuits.  The neoprane used in waders generally varies in thickness from 3 to 5 inches.  The colder the conditions you face, the thicker you will want the material to be. The drawbacks of neoprene are that it is heavy, binding and also not “breathable” making it less comfortable in warmer weather. Neoprene waders are considered as the middle class in price and utility of the options that are available to anglers.

Breathable waders, made of gore tex or similar materials, allow perspiration to escape while keeping the water out and are the preferred choice for most general fishing conditions. Breathable waders also allow for layering of clothing to help keep you warm in colder conditions.  If your fishing conditions involve hiking long distances and warmer weather, breathable waders are a must. The major drawback of breathable waders is price and they are generally at least 2 times the cost of neoprene waders and three to 4 times the cost of rubber waders
.

Consider Water Depth

There are 3 basic styles of waders; hip waders, waist waders and chest waders.  Hip waders are the least expensive and are limited to use in shallow streams and rivers if you want to stay dry. Hip waders are effective in water depths up to your knee

Waste waders, as might be expected reach, the waist of the fisherman and include a belt that buckles similar to a pair of pants. Waist waders, also know as pants waders, work for fishing shallow or moderately deep waters and are more comfortable and easier to maneuver in than the chest waders that are needed in deeper waters. They are also less expensive than chest waders. This style is the right choice for waders that reach your thigh.

As the name suggests, chest waders extend to the chest of the angler and include straps that secure them over the shoulders like overalls. Chest waders are the most flexible of the 3 styles waters because they allow the angler to get closer to fish that are hanging in the deepest holes and move to deeper water to avoid obstacles such as overhangs and bolders. These waders are the more expensive and more restrictive on movement than the waist style. These functional disadvantages can be mitigated by the specific design and the type of material from which the wader is constructed. Many chest waders, such as Redington's are convertible to waist waders when the conditions allow.
